How to check if your phone supports eSIM

    iPhone

    Go to Settings > General > About. If you see "Digital SIM" or an "EID" line, your iPhone supports eSIM.

    Android

    Open the Phone app and dial *#06#. If an EID (32-digit number) appears, your phone has an eSIM chip.

    Samsung

    Go to Settings > Connections > SIM manager. An "Add eSIM" option means eSIM is supported.

    Unlocked?

    Your phone must also be carrier-unlocked to use a travel eSIM from another provider (see below).

Is my phone unlocked?

A carrier-locked phone only accepts SIMs and eSIMs from the carrier that sold it — so even an eSIM-compatible phone will refuse a travel eSIM if it is locked. Phones bought outright from Apple, Google, Samsung or a retailer are usually unlocked; phones bought on a carrier plan often are not.

  • iPhone: Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. "No SIM restrictions" means it is unlocked.
  • Android: try a SIM card from another carrier, or ask your carrier. Most carriers unlock phones for free once the device is paid off.
  • Ask for the unlock before you travel: it can take a few days.

An eSIM is a SIM card built into your phone. Instead of inserting a plastic card, you download a mobile plan to it — from an app like FreeBird or by scanning a QR code. It works exactly like a physical SIM for mobile data.

Can I keep my WhatsApp and my phone number?

Yes. Your WhatsApp account stays linked to your usual number, even when you use a travel eSIM for data. Keep your main SIM switched on for calls and texts if you want (roaming charges may apply), or turn it off and keep using WhatsApp over FreeBird data.

Can I use my usual SIM and an eSIM at the same time?

Yes, on dual SIM phones — which includes every eSIM phone in this list. You choose which line to use for mobile data (FreeBird) and which for calls and texts (your usual line).

Does eSIM work on iPad?

Yes, on Wi-Fi + Cellular iPads: iPad Pro 11-inch and 12.9-inch (3rd generation) and later, iPad Air (3rd generation) and later, iPad (7th generation) and later, and iPad mini (5th generation) and later. Wi-Fi-only iPads cannot use eSIM.

What if my phone is not compatible?

If your phone has no eSIM, you cannot install a travel eSIM on it. You can use a local physical SIM card at your destination, or use FreeBird on another compatible device such as a recent cellular iPad and share its connection with a hotspot.
