Which iPhones and iPads support eSIM?
Every iPhone since the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR (2018) supports eSIM, and recent iPhones sold in the US are eSIM-only. Cellular iPads from the last several generations support eSIM too. The main exceptions are models sold in mainland China and some models from Hong Kong and Macao.

Exceptions and things to know
- Mainland China: only iPhone Air, iPhone 17e, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max support eSIM. Other iPhones sold there use two physical SIM cards.
- Hong Kong and Macao: some iPhone models sold there have two nano-SIM slots instead of eSIM.
- US models of iPhone 14 and later have no SIM tray at all: they are eSIM-only, which makes adding a travel eSIM even easier.
- A carrier-locked iPhone cannot use a travel eSIM from another provider. Check under Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock: it should say "No SIM restrictions".
- Wi-Fi-only iPads have no cellular hardware and cannot use any eSIM.
How to check your iPhone or iPad

Open Settings > General > About and scroll down. If you see a "Digital SIM" or "EID" line, your iPhone supports eSIM.

Open Settings > Cellular (Mobile Data): an "Add eSIM" option confirms eSIM support.

In the same About screen, check "Carrier Lock": "No SIM restrictions" means the iPhone is unlocked.

Does the iPhone 15 support eSIM?
Yes. Every iPhone 15 model (15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max) supports eSIM. Outside the US they also keep a nano-SIM slot; US models are eSIM-only.
Does my old iPhone X or iPhone 8 support eSIM?
No. eSIM support starts with the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR. The iPhone X, iPhone 8 and older only take a physical SIM card.
How many eSIMs can an iPhone hold?
An iPhone can store eight or more eSIMs, and use two lines at the same time. You can keep your usual line for calls and texts while FreeBird handles data abroad.
